PARTICIPANT BIOS
BIOGRAPHIES SLOW EAR ENSEMBLE Wilmington, NC's Slow Ear Ensemble is an improvisational group of local experimental musicians comprised of Carl Kruger (https://www.discogs.com/artist/225915-Carl-Kruger), Phil Zampino (http://www.squidco.com), Sean Hart (https://youtu.be/t-PpryYE2EE), Grant Stewart (https://soundcloud.com/subterrene/) and Allison Parker (https://www.youtube.com@allison5 ). An active part of Alban Elved Dance Company's the SARUS Festival and our common project "Solstice Cycles" in Wilmington since 2015, our visuals accompanied performances and reflect their name as their drone based soundscapes evolve, subtly pulse and expand using live instrumentation, modular synthesizers, and manipulated sample sources. Their appearances yield immersive aural experiences to the patient and sound curious. KAROLA LUETTRINGHAUS/ALBANELVED DANCE I was born and grew up in Berlin, Germany. I received a BFA in Choreography and Modern Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and an MA in Scenic Design and Scenography from the Technische Universität Berlin. I completed an MA in Performance Studies at UC Davis where I am currently a PhD Candidate in the Performance Studies Program, writing my dissertation on "Tracing Gesture: Emergence and Signification in the Choreographic Process". I currently split my time between Germany, North Carolina, and Mexico. I create interdisciplinary expressions in choreography, scene design, visual art, lighting, sound, and film. Generally speaking, I think of my performative and movement research as an interrogation into the WHY's and HOW's of life, about society, and our systems of organization and cooperation. I am driven to become aware of the mechanisms of violence that we continue to reinscrive through our ways of thinking, interacting, and moving. I seek to create performance experiences that allow for an expansion of our expressive potential and an investigation of societal and personal psychological constrictions. For Earth Day: My starting point for this performance is a trust in the animacy and intelligence of all matter while regarding anthropocentrism as an unrealistic and problematic model for a healthy earth. |

BII - The Body's Intrinsic Intelligence gentle Biomechanics, spinal undulations Die Kunst der Muehelosigkeit The Art of Effortlessness OPEN CLASS at Ponderosa e.V. Studios no charge - free - kostenfrei Oktober 5 & 6, 2021 (Tuesday/Wednesday) @ 13-15 Uhr, Kuhstall Studio September 29+30, 2021 Info about Ponderosa: ponderosa-dance.de photo of Karola Luettringhaus by Robert Andrew Turner more info
I call my approach and movement research work BII - The Body's Intrinsic Intelligence. This suggests an inherent intelligence of the body that I can learn from, a body that 'move-thinks'. There are many places we can go from this premise. This class focuses on gentle embodied exploration of Biomechanics, spinal undulations as sources for full-bodied expression, examining our notions of alignment, for the purpose of finding new pathways and entry-points for athletic effortlessness and a refined body schema. Every part is encouraged to articulate freely and within its parameters in order to facilitate and support coordinated/orchestrated movement of all parts and the body as a whole. Die Kunst der Muehelosigkeit/The Art of Effortlessness then carries into philosophical ideas around not fighting oneself, around timing and rhythm which arises from the dynamic and responsive interplay of the elastic recoil of the body's tissues and negotiated appropriate muscular effort. AXIS SYLLABUS LAB CLASS
BII: The Body's intrinsic Intelligence explorations of tensegrity, effortless action, and inner rhythms Berlin Kreuzberg Urbanraum urbanraum.com January 14th, 2020 2-3:30pm (14-15:30 Uhr) open to everyone free - donations welcome CLASS DESCRIPTION
BII: The Body's Intrinsic Intelligence Explorations of Tensegrity, Effortless Action, and Inner Rhythms My research revolves around the study of effortlessness, responsiveness and flow. I find that the principles referenced in the Axis Syllabus resonate with the Daoist concept of Wu Wei, sometimes translated as "effortless action", and described by Alan Watts as 'not to force anything' and 'to always act in accordance with the pattern of things as they exist.' To work towards unhesitating responsiveness, transitional flow and the expression of inner rhythms that harmonize in wild but joyful play, I would like to look at three main elements that I think are part of this general framework of existing patterns: alignment, individuation and tensegrity. Alignment - meaning physiologicalcoherency Tensegrity - meaning balancing internal forces Individuation - meaning adapting and personalizing counsel and activity. A little bit more detail: With some special attention on the spine as a model for a complex interplay of articulations, and touch as a method for sensing more profoundly, I would like to play with fine-tuning our proprioceptive senses and our methods for responding. In an interplay of holding on and letting go we explore undulations and kinetic chains as they are generated and change one another. In conversation between guided sequences and individual improvisation, movements will begin slow and meditative, allowing for detailed inquiry into individual moments, and culminate in dynamically variable, faster, rhythmic expressions. |

Our focus audiences are ages 7-11, while adult audiences will be met intellectually as well. 'The Light of the Water' examines the many aspects of water, it's characteristics and meaning for our lives while addressing current-day concerns about water quality and availability. 'In a world where we can not drink our city water without worry, testing, or extracting man-made pollutants, I want to take another look at water, remind us of its beauty and necessity, while encouraging a sense of responsibility and inheritance in our youth', says Karola Luettringhaus. 'Let's go on a journey together and follow water around the globe, from droplet to ocean to deep sea creatures, from splashing, and bathing, to drinking and considerations for environmental stewardship.' Thursday & Friday - Winston-Salem, NC Salem College 'A Midsummer Nights Dream - Hippolyta's Disappearance' German Dance Theatre Performance more info
Based on William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' 'Hippolyta's Disappearance' is a viscerally physical and social critical commentary on authority and autonomy of women in a patriarchy, on social and political hierarchies and on the inconstancy of love and human emotion.
In 'Hippolyta's Disappearance' one character slips into the various situations of the play, merging with a current day persona and the mythological Hippolyta. This German Dance Theatre (Tanztheater) piece tells the story of remembering wholeness, of being complete without a male counterpart, of embracing both male and female gender roles and experiencing the pain and loss of identity caused by the separation of the sexes. http://www.karolaluettringhaus.com/hippolytas-disappearance-solo.html More information: [email protected] http://www.dynamic-body.org/ceu-course- TICKETS:

We seek to understand the structures and the mechanisms of movement. The Dynamic Bodywork modality is based on the premise that understanding and maintaining proper alignment has significant effects on myo-fascial health, and thereby on the healing outcomes of manual therapy in the long term. In Dynamic Bodywork, movement and touch are experienced simultaneously to benefit each other and intensify the building of neural pathways and reorganizing the body map. Movement is the essence of life and our bodies are built for it. 'BII – The Body's Intrinsic Intelligence' seeks to investigate and practice a way of moving that is in harmony with the Our bodies are built to move. This workshop seeks to investigate and practice a way of moving that is in harmony with the body's natural design and allows for optimal structural integrity, coordination, and cooperation during situations that we encounter in everyday life as well as in complex athletic dance sequences. In Dancer Self-Care, we will take time to look inward. Our focus lies on injury prevention and recovery through understanding joint anatomy and function while allowing ourselves to be at peace with the reality of our individual physicality. Through multi-directional movement sequences, somatic work, improvisations, studying anatomical models, palpation, and discussion, we observe the interplay of the body’s individual components in detail and refine our listening and response tools. We will adapt the speed and complexity to each participant's needs, offering a gentle, democratic, and (w)holistic approach to body management and teaching. |
