'VITA 2' 2015 @ SARUS Festival
Choreography, Costume, Animation, Dance: Karola Lüttringhaus Composition, Programming, Concept, Sound Director, Dramaturgy: Samuel Allen Taylor 'VITA' 2013 Scene Design and production, Choreography, Sculpture, Costume, Animation, Dance: Karola Lüttringhaus Composition, Programming, Concept, Sound Director, Dramaturgy: Samuel Allen Taylor “Vita” is a deeply personal meditation on the complex relationship between biological life and technology, in both its glorious and tragic modes; and that some kind of mysterious yet elusive energetic synthesis of the two could propel humanity to a deeper state of resonance with nature. The work speaks of a gap between felt and imposed identity. "Vita" utilizes movement-capture technology which consists of sensors attached to the body that measure velocity, movement and luminosity. These are used by the dancer in conjunction with the composer, to realize a musical score live. The computer is "listening", poised and waiting for certain types of events and responding like an orchestra to a conductor, or perhaps sometimes more like a string to a bow.
Scene Design: A simple 45-Degree raked platform faces the audience, which, ideally is seated slightly elevated so as to look directly onto the platform surface. The performer climbs and moves inside paintings and animations that are projected to fit the platform exactly. The animations are the only lighting source. Costume: The dark wires are visible on the light gray costume. Shoes are necessary to maintain traction on the steep rake and a reminscent of moccasins. Gray was chosen to allow the dancer to become projection surface as well as stand out against a white background. Props: an artificial tree, a flexible sculpture made from light grey glittery material is brought onto the platform to fill the projection of a tree with something 3-dimensional.
